Smoke and Fire Detection Technology

National and International building codes have required smoke/fire detection devices for residential properties for almost 50 years. Nearly every home in the world has some type of smoke/fire detection device. The codes, while requiring the installation of these devices, do not specify any particular type of device, nor do they define the functionality beyond a minimal level of notification. Hensley Premier Builders recommends that our homeowners seriously consider options for improving the level of smoke/fire detection in their homes.

Most smoke/fire detectors use a single sensor to detect a fire in the home. These sensors are available in two types: ionization and photo-electric. The two types of sensors are designed to detect two different types of fires. One sensor will detect a flaming fire, while the other will detect a smoldering fire. Only through the use of Dual Sensor Smoke Detectors can your home be equipped for notification of both types of fire.

Dual Sensor Smoke Detectors are NOT the same as Combination Smoke Detectors. A Combination Smoke Detector is an industry term used to describe a detector that can sense the presence of fire as well as Carbon Monoxide in the home. Carbon Monoxide detectors are required in all homes, and manufacturers have developed units that can detect both fire (smoke) and carbon monoxide and have named these detectors Combination detectors. Only detectors labeled "Dual Sensor" have both an ionization and a photo-electric sensor for detecting both types of fires in your home.

Homeowners will be happy to know that manufacturers are now making what are known as Combination Dual Sensor Smoke Detectors. These units can detect both types of fire as well as carbon monoxide in the home. Hensley Premier Builders installs smoke detectors in all homes and recommends that homeowners choose to upgrade to the Dual Sensor type smoke detector.
